Non-destructive testing is a group of scientific test methods used to evaluate the properties of a material, component, or system without altering or damaging the item being inspected. UBS consultants use these techniques to determine:
-
Moisture content of porous and semi-porous materials such as wood, carpet, concrete, drywall, plaster, and insulation
-
Leak location in roofs, pressure containment systems, and structures
-
Smoke penetration into walls and other cavities
-
Wind damage to roof structures, exterior walls, doors, and windows
-
Hail damage to building envelope components, including roofing materials, cladding such as siding, EIFS, and stucco, gutter and flashing systems, and HVAC systems

Our experts use instruments that detect moisture through electrical conductivity, imaging equipment that inspects confined spaces and cavities through surface temperature differences or flexible optical cameras, instruments that measure temperature and humidity, devices that measure the size and volume of affected areas, and tools that evaluate the environmental and structural conditions present at the time of loss and during ongoing monitoring. Inspection and monitoring tools developed for non-destructive testing and scientific analysis include moisture sensors, moisture meters, infrared thermography, borescopes, liquid and gas penetrants for leak detection, thermo-hygrometers, NOAA preliminary and final weather data, and visual inspections.
